ZENITH LATCHKEY PROGRAM ZENITH is an after-school program at Avalon Gardens Elementary designed to improve school achievement, especially literacy; promote cultural and linguistic pride; promote self-esteem and social competence; to improve parenting; and enrich family literacy. Funded by the State Department of Education, the program operates from 11:00 a.ml to 6:00 p.m. during the summer, and 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. during the regular school year. It includes lunch (summer only) and an afternoon snack, recreation, and field trips. Major program components are listed below: I LEARN consists of basic skills instruction and homework assistance activities to improve school performance for children in the early elementary grades. The goals of I LEARN are to improve children's school performacnce, attendance, and behavior. I AM promotes children's social skills and self confidence through a weekly Children's Rap Group, and provides and reinfoces opportunities for success throughout all program activities. Included in this focus is social competence, social skills building, and problem solving. THE FAMILY SUPPORT COMPONENT is designed to help parents provide a more supportive nurturing environment for their children. Focusing on the development of positive parenting skills, this component presents workshops on topics such as discipline, goal-setting for the child and family, communication, etc. Avalon Gardens Elementary School |
