TCCI recently received $2,500 in funding from the Office of LA County Supervisor, Holly J. Mitchell.
These funds will help restore and enhance weekly food and essentials distributions for families enrolled in our child care centers across South Los Angeles.
With the elimination of SNAP funding, TCCI’s CalFresh programming was drastically reduced, which previously sustained fresh produce distributions, nutrition education, physical activity teacher trainings, and gardening opportunities for enrolled children and TCCI child care families each week. Recent SNAP reductions have intensified food insecurity in our most vulnerable communities, negatively impacting our children’s nutrition and school readiness.
Funding will reestablish and bolster predictable, stigma-free food and resource pickup at each of our eight ECE sites across South Los Angeles and District Two. Funds will also directly support our food pantry and seasonal distribution events hosted by our FamilySource Center (FSC), which are integrated with parent engagement, wraparound services, and case management referrals.
These events are much more than the distribution of fresh produce – they are an opportunity to engage and connect community members with other opportunities that contribute to poverty alleviation. For youth, our FSC provides homework assistance, basic skills tutorials, and college corner exposure to enhance educational outcomes. Our FSC also assists families with employment resources and referrals, case management, tax preparation, and immigration/citizenship services.
