The CalFresh Healthy Living (CFHL) program collaborates with Child Development to reduce the risk of obesity, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease through various initiatives and activities. Each month, the program distributes fresh fruits and vegetables to children and families enrolled at TCCI. Throughout the 2022 programmatic year, CFHL contributed over 19,000 pounds of fresh produce to families at 10 TCCI childcare centers. Healthy recipes and nutritional handouts are included with each bag distributed.

CFHL health educators also provide nutrition education and physical activity opportunities for TCCI preschoolers and their parents. Through the Smarter Mealtimes Movement, preschool students are provided opportunities to learn about healthy foods and their food groups; participate in gardening activities; and try fresh fruits and vegetables in varying capacities. CFHL staff also train Child Development teachers on CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health), a physical activity curriculum that provides a foundation for preschool-aged children to explore physical activity and develop a love for movement. CFHL also continues to raise community consciousness about healthy, affordable foods and aims to reduce food insecurity in the South Los Angeles community.
